Periodic Paralysis (HYPOP & HYPP)

source:  Ronald G. Haller, MD

There are two forms of periodic paralysis: Hypokalemic and Hyperkalemic (may be associated with paramyotonia congenita). Onset of this condition usually occurs from childhood to adulthood. Clinical features include generalized muscle weakness with periods of paralysis affecting the arms, legs and neck (typically early in the morning before breakfast or during rest following exercise) and may be provoked by exercise, potassium loading, a cold environment, pregnancy, glucocorticoids, stress, and ethanol. Symptoms may be relieved by increasing carbohydrate intake and mild exercise.
